Key Takeaways from the 2024 Educator-in-Residence Programme (EiRP 2024)

In September 2024, the Centre for Teaching, Learning, and Technology (CTLT) had the privilege of hosting Professor Peter Felten, the 2024 Educator-in-Residence (EiR) Scholar from Elon University. Professor Felten’s visit featured a series of thought-provoking events, including a public lecture, interactive workshops, a student dialogue, and conversations with faculty and students. These sessions provided valuable insights into fostering meaningful connections in higher education, especially in an era shaped by AI, trust, and well-being. Key themes from his engagements included the importance of quality relationships in student success, the power of peer connections, and the potential for AI to transform learning environments. Professor Felten’s insights urged educators to rethink how technology can be integrated meaningfully, emphasizing that AI should serve the broader goals of education—trust, relationships, and learning.

Crafting Authentic Learning Experiences: Advancing Interdisciplinary Inquiry in Seminars

In this workshop, you will explore the authentic learning framework, a powerful pedagogical approach for crafting complex, realistic learning tasks and experiences for your students (Herrington, Reeves, and Oliver, 2014). The approach embeds knowledge in authentic contexts, challenging students to tackle real-world problems like professionals, and hone skills applicable to real-life challenges. Authentic learning not only reinforces these skillsets but also stimulates critical thinking and idea sharing to enhance the learning process. The workshop delves into practical examples, showcasing the implementation of the framework for advancing interdisciplinary inquiry in seminars. By engaging in discussions and collaborative activities, participants will learn effective strategies and discuss ways of overcoming challenges when applying the authentic learning framework. You will also uncover innovative ways to bridge academic and real-world experiences, fostering student empowerment.
